Some Glimpses of Bloody History of Roman Empire as revealed through Cicero’s Letters to Titus Pomponius - An Atticus (Athen) Cicero –(Died at the Age of 63 – 106 BCE – 43 BCE) was born a century before Christ and is the Father of the Republic Systems of Governance. To uphold Republic in those ambitious and tumultuous aristocratic mentalities of elite few, Cicero had paid the price with his life – he was murdered by Mark Antony brutally and was humiliated in public – denying even a burial. As a partisan of the Roman Senate, he even opposed the capture of the Roman state by Julius Caesar around 50 BC. In spite of his opposition to Julius Caesar’s anti-democratic politics, Cicero in a letter from 65 BC wrote: “I beg to inform you that on the very day that Julius Caesar and Marcius Figulus were elected to the consulship, I was blessed with a baby boy.” Cicero was a fine orator and many of his speeches have come down to us in full. Cicero was a great correspondent as well: “It is said tha

This article was written on the basis of a thought provoking essay under the heading “The WTO’s Challenge to MSP Is another Frontier to Cross” by Prabhash Ranjani published in The Hindu of 17 – 12 – 2021. The Author had suggested a new practical and permanent solution for the procurement to the Farmers Produce and the various aspects explained are really undisputable and worth implementing which will definitely benefit the farmers. Index of Abbreviations used in this Article: MSP – Minimum Support Price WTO – World Trade Organization AOA – Agreement on Agriculture (pertains to WTO) AMS – Aggregate Measurement of Support (pertains to WTO) ERP – External Reference Price (pertains to WTO).   Agitating Farmers main demand is a legal guarantee for MSP. India is WTO member country and hence any legal guarantee for MSP    should not violate international law   obligations  enshrined in AOA of WTO.   AOA’s objective is to cut trade-distorting domestic support to agriculture b

Every religion and culture of the world has one or more dancing deities. The Greek Olympian Apollo is often called the ‘Dancer’ -- the god of archery, music, dance, truth and prophecy. Zeus, the Master God of Greek mythology, dances frequently. One of the muses -- Terpsichore is a ‘goddess of dance and chorus’ -- her very name indicates that she delights in dancing. The Semitic Canaanite god, Baal Marqod likes to dance and is even described as the ‘inventor of dance’. Dances in celebration of god are mentioned in the Old Testament. Mera is the dancing Khmer goddess of Cambodia. Shinto religion also has a dancing goddess called Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto. In the Indian pantheon, Siva is not the sole dancer. Krishna, Vinayaka, Muruga, Parvati and Vishnu also dance. However, the dance of bliss by Nataraja is unique.

Makar Sankranti is being celebrated on January 14, 2022 – Friday.  In Tamil Nadu, the festival is called Pongal. In Punjab, it is Lohri/Maghi in Punjab and in Assam it is Magh Bihu and Uttarayan in Gujarat.   Makar Sankranti marks the annual transit of the Sun from Dhanu (Sagittarius) to Makar (Capricorn) in the Hindu month of Pausha and is associated with the Sun God. So people pay tributes to the celestial body for sustaining life on earth. The Sun's warm rays give relief to people from the intense cold weather. Moreover, agriculture wouldn't be possible without sunlight. Therefore, people worship the Sun God and harvest crops. A good yield symbolises prosperity, and hence, people look forward to a positive/blissful future.
