This festival is associated with 'Bhishma Pitamaha', the grandsire of the epic Mahabharata'. Bhishma is known as the legendary king of Mahabharata whom Lord Krishna praised as the Lords of the lord. Bhishmashtami i.e Bhishma Ashtami,is the festival which is celebrated on the twenty-third day of Magha (Jan-Feb) and eighth lunar day of the light half (waxing phase of the moon)and it has special and traditional origin. During the war of Kurukshetra, Bhishma had to enter the war on the side of Kauravas. As there were defeat after defeat, prince Duryodhana of Kauravas, suspected the behaviour of Bhishma Pitamaha. Bhishma was disturbed by this and to save his self respect, in anguish, he took up the most powerful 'Astra', which could only be opposed by anyone including Shri Krishna.   Maha Shivaratri means ‘Great Night for Lord Shiva’. That Night was Great because it was the birthday of Lord Shiva, the marriage day of Lord Shiva and Sakthi Devi Parvathi and also the day of His Cosmic Dance of Creation, Preservation and Destruction.   Shukla Paksha Saptami in the month of Magha is known as Ratha Saptami or Magha Saptami.  It is the birthday of Bhagwan Surya.  Hence this day is also defined as Surya Jayanti. Bhagwan Surya is said to be sitting on a chariot with seven white horses. The day of Ratha Saptami  denotes the journey of Lord Surya to the Northern hemisphere in his chariot. It marks the arrival of summer and indicates a change in the climatic conditions across the regions of Southern India.  It also symbolizes the beginning of the harvest season for the farmers. Basant Panchami or Saraswathi Panchami or Saraswathi Jayanti – on 16th February 2021 – Tuesday.

  Goddess Saraswati is believed to have born on Basant Panchami and hence it is also called as Saraswati Jayanthi. Saraswati symbolizes knowledge, music and arts in Hinduism. Basant Panchami is celebrated during 'Shukla Paksha' or the Full Moon fortnight in the month of Magha of the Hindu calendar. This is also the day when little children are introduced to alphabets in a beautiful ceremony known as 'Akshar-Abhyasam' or 'Vidya-Arambham'. It is a big day for schools and colleges in different parts of the country. Goddess Saraswati is usually dressed in a white and yellow saree which are important colours during the festival. The devotees even prepare snacks and sweets having yellow colours.
