His earlier name was Ratnakara.   When he met Narad Muni, who was a Hindu messenger, he started meditating upon Lord Rama   to become Valmiki and wrote Ramayana – Story of Rama.   Valmiki Jayanthi is also to as Pragat Diwas.   With reverence, devotees commemorate Valmiki Jayanti, a day to pray, recite poems from the Ramayana. It is a celebration of knowledge, morality, and the eternal lessons taught by the Ramayana. The festival of Maharshi Valmiki is celebrated in a grand manner in Valmiki Temple at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. This is a 1,300 years old temple.
