16 - 02 - 2022 - Vasant Panchami – Birth Day of Goddess Sarasvati

The word ‘Vasant’ means spring and ‘Panchami’ implies the fifth day. That is why the fifth day of Spring Season is celebrated as Sarasvati Devi’s Jayanti called Vasant Panchami.

As per Hindu calendar, Vasant Panchami date falls in the month of Magha on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha or the bright half of every year which comes around late January or Early February.

Vasant Panchami also marks the beginning of the preparations of Holi and Holika Bonfire which occurs 40 days after this festival.

Sarasvati Devi is the deity of wisdom, art, science, knowledge and music.

Yellow is Sarasvati’s favored color.

Vasant Panchami is a colorful and joyous festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs across India.

Wearing Yellow Clothes, the devotees adorn Sarasvati Idol also with Yellow Cloth, Yellow Sandal Wood Paste and Yellow Flowers to perform Pooja.  Books and Musical Instruments are also placed in the Pooja room and worshipped.

The Devotees offer sweet Yellow rice or any yellow colored food as Prasad to the Goddess. They distribute books to small children along with Prasad after completing Vasant Panchami Sarasvati Puja.

In Hindu Astrology, the day of Vasant Panchami is considered as the most auspicious day to start any new work.

It is believed that Vasant Panchami is the best day to begin studies of children. Thus, people perform Aksharabhyasam or Vidyarambham ceremony in the temples on Vasant Panchami.

Aksharabhyasam is performed mainly in South Indian states.

There is another version about Vasant Panchami Festival.

Kama Deva is the Hindu god of Love and his wife is Rati Devi. God Kamadeva was burnt to ashes by Lord Shiva for his wrongdoings. Consequently, his wife Rati had to undergo 40 days of strict penance to bring her husband, Lord Kama, back. It was on the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami that Lord Shiva finally yielded to her request and brought her husband back to life. From that day till today, Lord Kama, the god of love, along with his wife Rati are worshipped by devotees in several parts of India on this Vasant Panchami.

It is considered as the day of love by many. To celebrate love and its various emotions, women and men dress up in saffron and pink and sing the different ragas of love and emotions and dance on the beats of drums. In many areas such as Kutch, people give each other a garland of flowers set with mango leaves as a token of love and affection.

Vasant Panchami symbolizes Knowledge and Love which make our life meaningful and joyful.

LET US PRAY GODDESS SARASVATI AND GOD KAMADEV TO BESTOW US WITH THEIR BLESSINGS OF WISDOM AND JOY THROUGHOUT OUR LIFE TO LEAD HAPPY, HEALTHY AND WEALTHY LIFE.
