Greatness of Thai Poosam – on Thursday, 28th January 2021

The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of a star, Pusam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival.

Hindu Mythology believes that the world came into existence on this auspicious day.

It is also believed that on this day, Lord Siva and His consort Uma Devi blessed the sage Vyagrapadha and Patanjali with their blissful cosmic dance in Chidambaram.

It is also believed that Murugan was presented with a most powerful weapon called ‘Vel” (spear) so that Murugan could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman and his brothers.

Apart from these ancient Godly episodes to indicate the greatness of this day, there is one more latest historic event to add to the glory of this date.

Thai Poosam is also coincide with the 'Jyoti darshan' at Sathya Gnana Sabha (Hall of True Knowledge), founded by Ramalinga Adigalar, popularly known as Vallalar.

Arutprakasa Ramalinga Swamigal (born 5-10-1823 –  disappeared 30-01-1874) worshiped as Tamil Saint Vallalar – founder of Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sathiya Sangam emphasizing the Love of All Creatures, Eschewing Meats, Eternal Fire Lit to Quench Hunger, Spreading Message of Mercy.

On 22nd October 1873, Vallalar from his one room residence called Siddhi Vilagam (Place of Salvation) in Mettukuppam gave his final and most popular lecture and kept a lighted lamp outside his room which he said to be focused during meditation.

On 30 January 1874, Vallalar entered the room, locked himself inside and told his followers not to open it. After opening, he said, he will not be found there.

The Government forced the doors open in May 1874 and the room was empty, with no clues. In 1906, records about his disappearance were published in the South Arcot District's Madras District Gazetteers.

Let us be Blessed by Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord of Victory Murugan.

Let us also seek the blessings of Saint Vallalar.
