Hanuman Chalisa – Meaning of Each Verse
The Hanuman Chalisa is a powerful hymn written by Goswami
Tulsidas in praise of Lord Hanuman, highlighting his strength,

verse:
॥ दोहा ॥ (Dohas - Introductory Verses)
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनऊं रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
Meaning:
I cleanse the mirror of my heart with the dust of my Guru’s feet and sing the
pure glories of Lord Rama, who grants the fourfold rewards of life (Dharma,
Artha, Kama, Moksha).
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल, बुद्धि, विद्या देहु मोहि, हरहु कलेश विकार॥
Meaning:
Knowing that I am ignorant, I meditate on Hanuman, the son of the Wind God.
Please grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my sorrows and
impurities.

Verses of Praise)
- जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
Hail Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue! Hail the chief of the Vanaras, who is famous across the three worlds! - राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।
अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
You are the divine messenger of Lord Rama, an abode of immense strength. You are the son of Anjana and the Wind God (Pavan Putra). - महावीर विक्रम बजरंगी।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
You are mighty, valiant, and have a body as strong as a thunderbolt. You remove evil thoughts and are a companion of wisdom. - कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
कानन कुंडल कुँचित केसा॥
Your golden complexion shines brilliantly. You wear earrings, and your curly hair enhances your beauty. - हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
You carry a mace (Vajra) and a flag in your hands, and you wear a sacred thread (Yajnopavita) across your shoulder. - शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन।
तेज प्रताप महा जग वंदन॥
You are an incarnation of Lord Shiva and the son of Kesari. Your radiance and glory are revered by the entire universe. - विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
You are extremely wise, virtuous, and intelligent. You are always eager to carry out Lord Rama's work. - प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
You love listening to the divine exploits of Lord Rama, and you always dwell in the hearts of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. - सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
You took a small form to meet Sita and a gigantic form to burn Lanka. - भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे।
रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥
In your fierce form, you destroyed demons and fulfilled Lord Rama’s mission. - लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये।
श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
You brought the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshmana, and Lord Rama embraced you joyfully. - रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
Lord Rama praised you immensely and declared that you are as dear to Him as His brother Bharata. - सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं।
अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥
Lord Vishnu (Sri Hari) himself proclaims that even a thousand mouths cannot fully describe your glory. - सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
नारद शारद सहित अहीसा॥
Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, Narada, and Saraswati, along with the serpent king Shesha, sing your praises. - जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते।
कवि कोविद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥
Even Yama (God of Death), Kubera (God of Wealth), and the guardians of the directions cannot describe your greatness. - तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहि कीन्हा।
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥
You helped Sugriva by introducing him to Lord Rama and reinstating him as the king of Kishkindha. - तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना।
लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना॥
Following your advice, Vibhishana took refuge in Lord Rama and became the king of Lanka. - युग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
As a child, you leaped thousands of miles to swallow the Sun, mistaking it for a sweet fruit. - प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
With Lord Rama’s ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean effortlessly. - दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
You make the impossible possible through your grace. - राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
You are the divine guardian at Lord Rama’s door, and no one can enter without your permission. - सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
तुम रक्षक काहू को डर ना॥
Those who seek refuge in you enjoy all happiness and fear nothing. - आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
तीनों लोक हांक तें कांपै॥
You alone control your immense power, and all three worlds tremble at your roar. - भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
Evil spirits and ghosts do not dare approach when your name is chanted. - संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।
मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
Whoever meditates on you with mind, speech, and action is freed from all troubles. - सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा॥
Lord Rama is the supreme king of ascetics, and you have successfully completed all His tasks. - और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
Whoever prays to you with sincere wishes receives immense blessings in life. - चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
Your glory spreads across all four yugas, lighting up the entire universe. - साधु संत के तुम रखवारे।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥
You protect sages and saints, destroy demons, and are dear to Lord Rama. - अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
Mother Sita blessed you with the power to grant eight divine abilities and nine treasures.
31.राम रसायण
तुम्हरे पासा।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
You possess the elixir of devotion to Lord Rama and always remain His humble
servant.
32.तुम्हरे भजन
राम को पावै।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
By singing your praises, one attains Lord Rama and is freed from the
sufferings of many lifetimes.
33.अंतकाल रघुबर
पुर जाई।
जहाँ जन्म हरि भक्त कहाई॥
At the end of life, devotees who remember you reach the divine abode of Lord
Rama and are reborn as His devotees.
34.और देवता
चित्त न धरई।
हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥
One who surrenders to Hanuman needs no other deity, as he alone grants all
joys and blessings.
35.संकट कटै मिटै
सब पीरा।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
All troubles and sorrows vanish for those who meditate on Hanuman, the
mighty hero.
36.जै जै जै
हनुमान गोसाईं।
कृपा करहु गुरु देव की नाईं॥
Glory to you, O Lord Hanuman! Kindly bless me as a Guru blesses his
disciple.
37.जो सत बार पाठ
कर कोई।
छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥
One who recites the Hanuman Chalisa a hundred times is freed from bondage
and gains immense happiness.
38.जो यह पढ़ै
हनुमान चालीसा।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
Whoever recites the Hanuman Chalisa attains spiritual success; Lord Shiva
himself is the witness.
39.तुलसीदास सदा
हरि चेरा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा॥
Tulsidas, the humble servant of Lord Rama, prays that Hanuman may reside in
his heart forever.
