Modi’s State Visit to Seychelles on June 27 – June 29, 2026
Seychelles is archipelagic country of 115 islands in Indian Ocean of Continent Africa with only 8 to 10 Islands being inhabited of which Mahe, where its capital Victoria- (one of the world's smallest capitals) is situated.
Population of around 120,000 is concentrated in Mahe and it got its Independence from British Rule on 29 June 1976 and India established diplomatic relations immediately after Seychelles gained independence. It is having the elected presidential system of governance.
The present Indian population mostly from Gujarat,
Tamilnadu and Kerala, is around 10,000. The main religion is Catholic and
surprisingly, next major religion is Hinduism, though it is just about 5.4% of
the population.
Last but not the least, the islands name owes its origin
to Jean Moreau de Séchelles, who was the
French Minister of Finance during the reign of Louis XV, but, today Seychelles
refers to the independent Republic of Seychelles, not to a person, which one
should take note of.
PM Modi was invited by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie to attend the Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) of Seychelles' Independence Day as the Guest of Honour.
It is worthwhile to remember the similarities of India
and Seychelles:
Both are Indian Ocean democracies.
Both are members of the Commonwealth.
Both cooperate closely on maritime security.
Both support a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific.
India has been one of Seychelles' most trusted strategic partners. For India, Seychelles forms an important part of its maritime security architecture under the vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
Photos of the main event of celebrations of Seychelles’ 50th Independence Day Celebrations with Modi as the Chief Guest will highlight more than narrations of words.
A few select photos are published here.
Second Most Memorable Moment was when Modi Ji was
honoured with the "Guardian of the Blue Horizon".
The fact that “Guardian of the Blue Horizon" Presidential Award was newly instituted by the Republic of Seychelles in June 2026, shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit and that Modi became the first-ever recipient of the newly instituted "Guardian of the Blue Horizon" Presidential Distinction, the Republic of Seychelles' highest honour in the field of environmental leadership and sustainable ocean governance.
The award recognizes his contributions to climate action, the Blue Economy, maritime cooperation, and India's support for Small Island Developing States.
Another honour Republic of Seychelles had shown to Modi was to have him addressed an Extraordinary Sitting of the National Assembly of Seychelles, making him the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.
Following photos are enough to show the high regards Republic of Seycheles for Modi:
Main Points of His Speech:
The patrol boat named Espoir, the Liliput vehicles for the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) based at Gard Lakot Seychelles, together with the President, Doctor Patrick Herminie, were handed over in a ceremony.
In a special gesture, PM Modi handed over the ‘Made in India’ Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) PS LESPWAR to President Dr. Patrick Herminie. The FPV will contribute to strengthening Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and EEZ patrol capabilities.
PM also handed over 6 ambulances, 10 utility vehicles and 5 laser radial boats, which will further contribute to the development and security of Seychelles.
Guided by India’s Vision MAHASAGAR, India and
Seychelles continue to strengthen their robust defence partnership contributing
to security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.

Financial & Institutional MoUs:
The two nations exchanged key MoUs spanning Unified Payments Interface (UPI) deployment, space, health, shipping, and a Line of Credit worth ₹1,250 crores.
Seychelles also formally joined the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).
Seychelles holds a central position in India's Vision
MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across
Regions) and its outreach to the Global South. The visit heavily reinforced
security cooperation to counter regional Indian Ocean challenges like piracy,
illegal fishing, and narcotics trafficking.
This plant is respected by many in Seychelles, it's also visible on its coat of arms. Seychellois celebrate the Coco de Mer for its largest seeds and heaviest fruit in the world. This planting signified India and Seychelles’ share of common will to safeguard biodiversity, promote environmental protection, and leave behind a greener and healthier planet for future generations.
For Visual a photo is published above.
Modi visited the Giant Tortoise Enclosure at the
Seychelles National Botanical Garden with President Dr. Patrick Herminie.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address in Seychelles referred Lenn Uswatte, an Indian-origin member of a respected Seychellois family. In that context, Mr. Modi was appreciating the family's affection for Lenn and recognizing the family's long-standing contributions to the development of Seychelles.
That Lenn ‘s Legacy is still the motivating factor for
the present generation of Indian Diaspora. Modi was flanked by such Indians in
the photo on the left.
MODI’S HINDU
RELIGIOUS FERVOUR:
Modi’s
Narratives:
1. I prayed at the prominent Hindu temple in Victoria, Seychelles, Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar. May Lord Shri Ganesh bestow wisdom, strength, and prosperity upon all—this is my prayer.
2. I commend the efforts undertaken by the Seychelles
Hindu Temple Society to construct the Arulmigu Navashakthi Vinayagar Temple in
the country of Seychelles, and to promote Indian culture and the various facets
of spirituality.
Wherever our Indian Origin People are settled however small that country may be or however small their population is, Modi takes interests in visiting such countries with enthusiasm and full of energy. His visits always carries the message mutual trust and enduring developmental measures enriching both countries. Modi’s most powerful message is ‘Let us Unite Indian Origin People and make us to contribute to their best to the country of their livelihood and at the same time igniting their inner feelings with their Mother Land that is Bharat.
That is Modi – The Visva Guru.
