Atthi Varadar Divvya Darshan – Once in 40 Years Darshan Event at Kancheepuram

Image
During the last days of June 2019, a nine-feet Athi Varadhar idol was brought back from the temple tank and after completion of rituals, Athivaradhar was brought to Vasantha Mandapam right on the main entrance of the temple for public darshan .  No regular aradhana rituals are performed to the idol, but the offerings of the devotees are accepted.  The first 24 days Athivaradhar is kept in a reclining position and the remaining 24 days in standing position.  The last time the idol was taken out on July 2,1979 and earlier on July 12, 1939. According to legend, Goddess Saraswathi had a misunderstanding with her husband Brahma.  So Saraswathi took the form of a river called Vegavathi and tried to disturb Brahma’s Aswamedha Yagna in the Athi forest. But Vishnu emerged from the holy fire of yagna as Athivaradhar   to stop the river from interrupting the Yagna .   Viswakarma carved  out a body for Athivaradar   using a fig tree and Var

Three Types of Human Nature: (Three Gunas – Sattva, Rajas, Tamas)

Image
The Nature- consisting of five basic elements – air, fire, water, earth and ether – is the mother of all creations, while the seed-giving father is the Supreme Self. All beings are created from the union of matter or body and Supreme Self, which is in the form of spirit or soul. The factors that bind the soul to the body are the three fold human characters – viz. goodness, passion and ignorance (three gunas). Goodness mode - pure and luminous, binds the soul to the body with joy and wisdom and it moves the soul upwards and is the most beneficial to the soul to reach heaven. Passion mode – cupidity and attachment- binds the soul to body with actions and their fruits. It keeps the soul in the middle with the onslaughts of greed, selfish works and restlessness and excitement. Such soul, while leaving the body, is reborn among those attached to action. Ignorant Mode – Impure and Delusion – binds the soul to the body with carelessness, laziness and sleep and it move

Fruit of Action

Image
Motive of Action: One has to do Karma or Action without any expectation of its resultant reward or Fruit. The motive force of action should not be the fruit of action. At the same time, Non-attachment to the fruit of action should not lead into inaction. One, who works only to enjoy the fruit of his labour, is verily unhappy because one has no control over the fruit of action. (Ch. 2 – 47)                                                                            Comments: Currency note has no value as a paper, as the paper cannot boil even a cup of water. But, the same currency note can buy us enough firewood to boil not only water but also to cook our food. Such is the power of the paper in view of the stamp of authority and approval printed on it. Action becomes powerful, if the action is stamped with ‘yoga of action’. Yoga of action here means selfless action or simply action without attachment to the fruit of action. The phrase – ‘Act

Call of Markandey Katju to Muslims’ Community

Image
Justice Markandey Katju in his article published in The Hindu Daily Newspaper dated 27 th June 2019 titled “Taking firm steps to emancipation – The 2019 election mandate should make the Muslim Community ponder over its future”  had quoted at the end sane sayings of Maulana Azad to Muslims in 1947 at the Jama Masjid: “Nobody can drown you unless you drown yourself. Nobody can defeat you unless you defeat yourself. The moment you realise this, you develop the confidence that this country is ours, along with others.” To achieve to develop the confidence that this country is ours, along with others, Katju wanted the Muslim Community to take three radical steps as under: 1.       Accept a Uniform Civil Code like other religious communities and thereby by implication meaning the abolition of the outdated feudal Sharia Law. The abolition of Sharia will not meant the abolition of Islam. Because the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 which had abolished the entire old non-statutory Hindu la

Karma Yoga is superior

Image
Arjuna said:   You praise in one breath both renunciation of action (Sanyasa) and the performance of action (Karma Yoga).  Tell me definitely, which one is the better of the two.   Lord Krishna said:  Of the two, the performance of action is superior to the renunciation of action.  Because renunciation of action (Sanyasa) is difficult to practise compared to the performance of action (karma yoga or selfless action). Renunciation and the performance of action - both lead to Liberation. But the man of selfless action (karma yogi) by keeping his mind fixed on God reaches Brahman faster than a Sanyasi.     In fact only ignorant treats yoga of knowledge and yoga of action as different. But the wise knows that yoga of knowledge and action is the same.  It is because the person, who has truly mastered one, gets the benefits of both. The state, which one attains by knowledge, that same state is attained by selfless action too. He, who sees both knowledge

Krishna as Lord of Action

Sacrificial duty keeps the wheel of creation in motion. Those who rejoice in sense pleasure with no sacrificial duties are said to lead vain and sinful lives.   If any one is delighted, contented and satisfied in the self, then for such enlightened person, there is no loss by his inaction. Because he does not depend on anybody for anything.     Lord Krishna said that there was nothing in all the three worlds – heaven, earth and the lower regions, for Him to do, nor was there anything worth attaining by Him, yet He continued to work.  Lord Krishna explained the reasons for His continuous non-stop work as follows: “If I do not engage in action relentlessly, people would follow My path resulting in the destruction of the worlds. Then, I should be the cause of confusion among men and of their ultimate destruction. I am therefore the Lord of Action.”                   (Main References: Ch.3, stanzas 9, 16, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24.)  Comments: A mirror, whic
