Three Types of Human Nature: (Three Gunas – Sattva, Rajas, Tamas)

Image
The Nature- consisting of five basic elements – air, fire, water, earth and ether – is the mother of all creations, while the seed-giving father is the Supreme Self. All beings are created from the union of matter or body and Supreme Self, which is in the form of spirit or soul. The factors that bind the soul to the body are the three fold human characters – viz. goodness, passion and ignorance (three gunas). Goodness mode - pure and luminous, binds the soul to the body with joy and wisdom and it moves the soul upwards and is the most beneficial to the soul to reach heaven. Passion mode – cupidity and attachment- binds the soul to body with actions and their fruits. It keeps the soul in the middle with the onslaughts of greed, selfish works and restlessness and excitement. Such soul, while leaving the body, is reborn among those attached to action. Ignorant Mode – Impure and Delusion – binds the soul to the body with carelessness, laziness and sleep and it move...

Fruit of Action

Image
Motive of Action: One has to do Karma or Action without any expectation of its resultant reward or Fruit. The motive force of action should not be the fruit of action. At the same time, Non-attachment to the fruit of action should not lead into inaction. One, who works only to enjoy the fruit of his labour, is verily unhappy because one has no control over the fruit of action. (Ch. 2 – 47)                                                                            Comments: Currency note has no value as a paper, as the paper cannot boil even a cup of water. But, the same currency note can buy us...

Call of Markandey Katju to Muslims’ Community

Image
Justice Markandey Katju in his article published in The Hindu Daily Newspaper dated 27 th June 2019 titled “Taking firm steps to emancipation – The 2019 election mandate should make the Muslim Community ponder over its future”  had quoted at the end sane sayings of Maulana Azad to Muslims in 1947 at the Jama Masjid: “Nobody can drown you unless you drown yourself. Nobody can defeat you unless you defeat yourself. The moment you realise this, you develop the confidence that this country is ours, along with others.” To achieve to develop the confidence that this country is ours, along with others, Katju wanted the Muslim Community to take three radical steps as under: 1.       Accept a Uniform Civil Code like other religious communities and thereby by implication meaning the abolition of the outdated feudal Sharia Law. The abolition of Sharia will not meant the abolition of Islam. Because the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 which had abolished the enti...

Karma Yoga is superior

Image
Arjuna said:   You praise in one breath both renunciation of action (Sanyasa) and the performance of action (Karma Yoga).  Tell me definitely, which one is the better of the two.   Lord Krishna said:  Of the two, the performance of action is superior to the renunciation of action.  Because renunciation of action (Sanyasa) is difficult to practise compared to the performance of action (karma yoga or selfless action). Renunciation and the performance of action - both lead to Liberation. But the man of selfless action (karma yogi) by keeping his mind fixed on God reaches Brahman faster than a Sanyasi.     In fact only ignorant treats yoga of knowledge and yoga of action as different. But the wise knows that yoga of knowledge and action is the same.  It is because the person, who has truly mastered one, gets the benefits of both. The state, which one attains by knowledge, that same state is attained by selfless ...

Krishna as Lord of Action

Image
Sacrificial duty keeps the wheel of creation in motion. Those who rejoice in sense pleasure with no sacrificial duties are said to lead vain and sinful lives.   If any one is delighted, contented and satisfied in the self, then for such enlightened person, there is no loss by his inaction. Because he does not depend on anybody for anything.     Lord Krishna said that there was nothing in all the three worlds – heaven, earth and the lower regions, for Him to do, nor was there anything worth attaining by Him, yet He continued to work.  Lord Krishna explained the reasons for His continuous non-stop work as follows: “If I do not engage in action relentlessly, people would follow My path resulting in the destruction of the worlds. Then, I should be the cause of confusion among men and of their ultimate destruction. I am therefore the Lord of Action.”                   ...

Action is Superior to Inaction

Image
Arjuna said: If you consider Knowledge as superior to Action, why then do you urge me to this dreadful action of killing our relatives and venerable Gurus? By seemingly conflicting words, you are confusing my mind. Tell me only about that which definitely lead to my highest good. Lord Krishna said: By merely abstaining from action, one cannot achieve freedom from the bondage of action. Further, no one can remain inactive even for a moment. Everyone is driven to action by the forces of Nature. He, who controls all sense organs, but dwells in his mind on the objects of the senses, is called a hypocrite. On the other hand, a person excels by controlling the sense organs by the power of the will, remaining unattached and also engaging the organs of action. Such actions are called yoga of action. Man does not attain actionlessness stage by abstaining from action. Again man does not also rise to perfection by mere renunciation. Therefore, perf...

Remove Jinnah’s portrait

Image
The article below was published in the Hindu dated 9the May 2018 and was written by Mr.Mohammed Ayoob, Professor Emeritius of International Relations, Michigan State University, and Senior Fellow Centre of Global Policy, Washington DC and above all, he is an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, Utter Pradesh.  Among other things, he says: Jinnah sacrificed Indian Muslims' interests on the basis of a spurious theory that suited his ambitions. In fact, Jinnah's portrait should have been removed from AMU not in 1947 but on March 23, 1940, when the Muslim League adopted the Pakistan resolution that demanded the division of India and of Indian Muslims.  Kindly read the full essay from here:    The controversy over Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh is partly contrived and partly genuine. Some BJP functionaries find it a convenient tool to further polarise society in order to win the 2019 Lok Sabha election....

Meditation - Compliled By S. Sankaran.

Image
Lord Krishna is called Lord of Meditation. It is because Krishna explains meditation in Bhagavad Gita.. Specific stanzas about modalities of meditation can be found in about 13 places – viz. Ch.2 – stanza 66, Ch. 4 – stanza 29, Ch.5 – stanzas 27 & 28, Ch.6 – stanzas 10 to 18. Lord Krishna has devoted to meditation the entire Chapter 6 appropriately titled as “Path of Meditation”. Let us know about meditation from the mouth of Lord Krishna Himself by reverentially posing a few questions to get His Answers. All Answers are strictly confined to Krishna’s words as revealed in Bhagavad Gita. 1. What are the prerequisites for the meditation? Lord Krishna speaks: One who eats too much, or who does not eat at all and who sleeps too much or too little, is not fit for meditation. One who is moderate in eating, recreation, working, sleeping and walking, is fit for meditation. 2. What are the preparations for the meditation? Lord Krishna speaks: On ...

Good Action, Bad Action and No Action

Image
Good Action, Bad Action and No Action  By S. Sankaran.   You are traveling in a train. The trees seen through the windows of the train are moving fast depending upon the speed of the train. The train and yourself in the train are moving, but the trees are fixed to the ground and are static without any movement by themselves. But, your movement - i.e. action of yours is being imposed on the trees, which seem to move. This is called ‘inaction in action’. Inaction of the trees has action imposed on them. In the sea, a ship, which is moving, seems to be motionless for the man at the shore. Similarly, moon is moving, but to you, it seems to be motionless. The movement of ship and moon ends up in inaction for the man who has no action. Here action is ‘action in inaction’. What is the purpose of narrating the phenomenon of   ‘inaction in action’ and ‘action in inaction’?   The above narrations are only prelude to explain the intricate meanings of o...
